Dawkins Making Contender Out Of Stanford

Jan 15, 2011 8:46 PM

Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins is in just his third season, but he's making a contender out of his team.

The Cardinal were picked to finish ninth in the Pac-10.

"I hadn’t thought about that,” Dawkins said. “I don’t really look at it that way. I’m just really proud of our guys’ effort for 40 minutes. I thought we played hard. I think we protected the home court very well."

Stanford is 8-0 at home and 2-3 against Pac-10 opponents.

Stanford Stuns Washington On Tip-In

Jan 14, 2011 9:00 AM

Stanford stunned No. 18 Washington 58-56 on Thursday night on a tip-in by Josh Owens with 29 seconds left.

"I just went up and tried to make a play. I personally thought the shot was going in, and then the guard got a position on my man under the basket and I got a portion that rolled," Owens said.

Scott Suggs missed a baseline three-pointer moments later for Washington after he knocked down a tying three with 1:08 left.

Stanford is 8-0 in Maples Pavilion for the program's best start on its home floor since going 14-0 during a 26-0 start in 2003-04.

A moment of silence was observed before Sunday's game between Arizona and Stanford.

The game was pushed back a day after the shootings of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and others outside a Tucson supermarket.

Before the game, University of Arizona president Robert Shelton spoke from midcourt to the crowd at McKale Center. He thanked Stanford for cooperating with the postponement and he praised doctors at nearby University Medical Center, where the shooting victims were taken.

Arizona won the game, 67-57, in front of 14,374 fans.

Arizona Postpones Game After Shooting

Jan 8, 2011 10:11 PM

Arizona postponed its game against Stanford on Saturday after U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head earlier in the day.

An assailant opened fire outside a grocery store in Tucson, Ariz., while Giffords met with constituents, killing five people, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge.

"The university feels the game should be delayed with deep respect to the victims and families impacted by this tragedy," Arizona athletics director Greg Byrne said.

The game was rescheduled for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
